Inspiration
Our site was inspired mostly by games like Cookie Clicker. Games that you would keep open in a tab throughout the day and check up on from time to time to buy the next upgrade or stare at and contemplate life. We thought that it would be fun to make something that would allow the player to cultivate something over time and have something fulfilling to look at once they did.
What it does
In essence, the site is a clicker game where the player clicks the fish in their browser to collect fish tokens that allow them to buy bait in order to go fishing to catch more fish to occupy their aquarium.
How we built it
The site is mostly build in React and we knew that was what we wanted to use from the start as React would allow us to easily reuse components for the several different fish that would inhabit the aquarium.
Challenges we ran into
Neither of us have ever set up a React environment before, so that posed a few challenges for us at the start of the Hackathon. Getting the fish to move around and stay on the screen was also a time consuming challenge. Overall, web development is not our forte.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We accomplished everything that we set out to do at the start of the Hackathon. We're also quite proud of some of the fish that we came up with.
What we learned
Through making this project, we learned how to efficiently use and set up React as well as hosing a website and using JavaScript asynchronous functions..
What's next for Browser Aquarium
We think it would be fun to expand the site with higher quality art and animations, more fish, a more engaging fishing mechanic and system, a way to track which fishes that you have, and a way to expand your aquarium.
