Inspiration
In 1891, Otto Kuase served the first hamburger in Hamburg, Germany. One hundred and thirty-one years later, we've served the first (to our knowledge) burger in the metaverse.
Cast out of Betty's Burgers by the Covid-19 pandemic, we resorted to ordering via DoorDash. We were in a real pickle. Like renowned food critic Anton Ego, our craving for ambiance went unfulfilled. Where was the smiling cashier? The sit-down experience? The joy of eating out was gone. We realized many at-risk individuals felt just like us and would only feel safe dining out if the experience was brought to the safety of their homes. After brainstorming, we realized there was only one solution -- we had to bring burgers to the metaverse.
What it does
BurgerVR is a fully functional fast food restaurant operating within the metaverse. Located within an idyllic forest, BurgerVR provides customers with the ambiance of a real burger joint from the comfort of their homes. The ordering process works like this: BurgerVR customers approach the cashier to activate our ordering system. This connects the customer to Betty's Burgers in the real world. They give the employee their address and what they would like to order. Once they've obtained their real-world burger, the customer enjoys the great taste in one of BurgerVR's classic red booths.
How we built it
BurgerVR runs on the Unity game engine. The ordering system that connects the customer to Betty's Burgers was created using C# scripts that call the Twilio API. Our logo was designed using Photoshop and Figma.
Challenges we ran into
- Staying awake since development ran much longer than anticipated.
- Fixing asset collision. The trees kept intruding into the restaurant's interior while interior decorations (tables, customers, etc.) kept falling through the floor. This made the dine-in experience less enjoyable.
- Learning Unity Development. Three of our team members had never used Unity before and had trouble modifying assets to fit the team's needs. Luckily we were able to figure it out!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Supporting Betty's Burgers, a local restaurant in the City of Santa Cruz.
- Providing the atmosphere of a eat-out experience when you're dining in.
- Learning Unity development!
What we learned
- How to program in C#
- How hard it is to be a game developer
- How to resolve disagreements and work towards a common goal
- How much we love making things!
What's next for BurgerVR
The next step is adding multiplayer so people who are at-risk or concerned about the pandemic can safely eat out with their friends and family. Thanks to everyone for showing so much interest in this project!
