Inspiration
We wanted to create an application for users to be encouraged to recycle their items. A lot of people want or have attempted to recycled but lack the encouragement to do so. We want to fix that issue.
What it does
SustainaBEElity allows people to earn points when they recycle items. Users can find out information about the items they are trying to recycle. Users can do this either by looking stuff up directly or by using our image recognition software on the mobile version. Users are encouraged to work on projects together. The way it works is by allowing users to build a "item" of their choice and each time they recycle something it contributes a certain amount of points towards that project. Users can share their project with anybody they want.
How we built it
We built the website version of our app using HTML/CSS/JAVASCRIPT/REACT as our front end and using Firebase for our backend. The mobile version of our app was built using Swift and we used TensorFlow Light for our image recognition software.
Challenges we ran into
Making sure that some of the components of the database were working together. Also setting up the camera image recognition was really hard to do.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We feel accomplished with the amount of web pages we were able to get done before the demo day. We are also proud of being able to get the mobile image recognition to work.
What we learned
We learned a lot of new components regarding the web. We also learned how to set up a vision recognition component with TensorFlow.
What's next for SustainaBEElity
First we will add more features to the user such as being able to view friends list, and message them on there. Also we want to find new ways we can encourage people to recycle.
