Inspiration

It all started when Abenaya was going to feed her fish. She got the food ready, turned around, and saw her goldfish eating a Loach. She saw a half of the Loach's body sticking out from the goldfish's mouth, struggling to stay alive. She then saw it go limp, and she knew, Toad is dead. Another day, Sarah's brother brought home a betta fish, he only survived 4 days before dying in the sad excuse for a tank. Both of these events were very traumatizing, and we both wanted to do better for the fish in this world. For Sarah, she wanted to learn how to take care of a fish properly and know what they need to survive, and for Abenaya, she wanted to make sure none of her other fish have the same fate as Toad. With this in mind, we came up with a way to find matches for our fish, and each fish would have a very simple yet thorough explanation of the conditions in which they are comfortable in, so that we can prevent fish death in the future

What it does

Compatafish is an app that is used to find out what fish would be compatible with the fish you already own. It also shows the information about each fish in the database in a clear and concise manner. The way we planned it is that you would enter the details of your current fish and tank, and through our database, you would be shown the best results for a companion for your fish, so your fish won’t meet the same tragic fate as many other fish. Along with the fish matches, it would give the fish’s care information such as diet or tank requirements, so the fish can have the best life possible.

How we built it

We used Figma to build an app prototype. We came up with a basic outline of what we want, a color scheme, how the user should interact with it, and how the computer should figure out the best way to match fishes up.

Challenges we ran into

Since this is all of our first time doing a hackathon, we really weren't sure what to expect. When we started with Figma, we realized that we didn't really know how the website making stuff works, but we got more comfortable with it as time moved on, but then came the problem of Figma Beta, where we needed to make checkboxes and fill out forms, but were not able to. Another challenge was time zone issues, where 3 of us were in the same time zone and the last was a whole different one. Overcoming that was a bit of an issue, but we made sure that each person on the team understood what needed to be done. The final challenge was the pitch video, as we didn't really understand what the pitch video needed to cover and how.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Made a prototype on Figma for our first time, managed to make it eye-catching, worked through the time zone issue, accomplished our team goal of making friends, meeting new people, and having fun :)

What we learned

We learned how to create a prototype on Figma (As we never used Figma before), we also learned about much different fish and what they like.

What's next for CompataFish

We had many ideas we hope to include, such as making the actual app, having a saved fish page feature (to view saved fish easily), we also hoped to make it inclusive to other animals such as amphibians, we hope to make a desktop version of CompataFish, as well as touching upon the matching process for the fish
