Inspiration

After a year of lockdowns and online everything, hanging out with friends online is getting kind of stale. We are all drifting further away from each other, and toward isolation. Most people have exhausted all the various options for games and activities, leaving excess time to get caught up in other work for school, work, etc. during what should be downtime with friends/loved ones. This can create excess stress, which in the long run can be detrimental to your mental health.
It's also just plain boring to sit in your chair all day!

Moving around often during the day is a great way to improve mental health and clear your mind. We thought that an app that would get you out of your chair and moving would add some novelty to online interactions with friends, give you something to do other than work and help you meet the goal of movement all at the same time.

What is ChillSpace?

ChillSpace is an online game that allows you to play what are usually in-person, physical games with your friends online in a web browser. ChillSpace's goal is to improve the user's mental health by reducing their isolation. Using your computer’s webcam, it tracks you and your friends’ movements in real-time and translates them into the games onscreen. When playing on ChillSpace, you are portrayed as an animated figure. No one can see your camera except for you. This reduces the anxiety of having to share your camera with the members of your room.

We spent most of our time building the framework to support such online play. So far, we have worked to create one game of volleyball that uses physics simulations to calculate the collisions, and position of a volleyball. This game is not yet complete, with more time, we would love to add more games to ChillSpace!

Challenges we ran into

  • Figuring out what kind of project we wanted to build
  • TensorFlow.js and getting the movements of multiple people on the same canvas
  • Getting the data to transfer through WebSockets properly

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Not sleeping for 36 hours #hackerlyfe
  • The whole thing actually works (some of it)

What we learned

  • TensorFlow.js
  • The importance of having a concrete idea going into a Hackathon
  • HTML canvas Physics
  • Using vectors outside of Math
  • Photoshop and Illustrator Techniques

What's next for ChillSpace

- Add more games to the application.
