Inspiration
We decided to pursue this project area because all four of our families have a long history of diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic illness that can have deadly consequences if left unchecked, and having personal experience with relatives that suffered a great deal from this terrible disease influenced us to try and aid the invaluable doctors that try and combat it.
What it does
Our app has various functionalities that aid both doctor and diabetes patient. First of all, both patients and doctors have the ability to create accounts that can be accessed at any time. Second of all, patients may choose from a selection of food produce on the app recommended by their doctor for people with diabetes. DiaCare has a built-in questionnaire that provides data about demographics. It also has a feedback survey for patients after they have received their food. If a client has any questions, DiaCare has an interface where users can directly email both their doctor and dietitian.
How we built it
We used a Django framework and HTML/CSS to make our app web viable. From there, we used a web wrapper to transform DiaCare into a mobile application.
Challenges we ran into
Our project required a significant level of front-end development, which made it rather difficult to finish on time. In addition, storing user objects in a SQL database was extremely difficult, as it required a wide variety of inputs.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to complete a complex application with both mobile and web compatibility in a short period of time, a feat that would definitely not have been possible without the work of our entire team. Each team member contributed in several different areas of the project, and we were well organized throughout.
What we learned
Our team gained significant experience with Bootstrap in order to make our app compatible on mobile. We also learned how to host a website on an AWS EC-2 server.
What's next for DiaCare
We are looking forward to further improving DiaCare as a vital tool for hospitals for managing food recommendations for diabetes patients. There are certainly many more useful tools we would love to integrate into our app with time!
