Inspiration

We're a team of Haitian diaspora. We are all very familiar with the remittance process in Haiti. Money transfer remittance from the Haitian diaspora accounts for 36% of Haiti's GDP at $4 Billion annually. As people of Haitian descent we have a desire to support the Haitian economy, but we require, trust, transparency, and accountability in the process.

Users of money transfer services incur a lot of fees as it is, but in 2011 President Martelly made a mandate that all money transfer providers would charge an additional $1.50 fee for all transactions made to Haiti. The funds raised from these fees were supposed to go towards education initiatives in Haiti. Over 10 years later no one knows where those funds have actually ended up.

Fond National De Education had a goal to make 27 schools by 2020, but as of 2021 only 3 schools where inaugurated. At least $25 million dollars has gone to Fond National De Education between 2011-2021.

What it does

Users have a faster, and more affordable way to transfer money to their family in Haiti while still supporting their favorite causes in Haiti. Dono provides transparency, and accountability.

How we built it

We built it using Next.js for the front end, and used API's from Stripe and Emtech to facilitate money transfer, and balance monitoring. Emtech is a

We ran into technical challenges due to the Emtech platform being in beta, and the sandbox not fully deployed.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud we were able to showcase a Haitian led fintech company like Emtech which will lead the way for future fintech applications that will service Haiti, and give Haitians in Haiti greater access to the global economy. Emtech is a We are also really proud that we could all come together as a team and work collaboratively to solve a problem that we all know too well as people of Haitian descent.
