Inspiration & Research
The internet is a valuable resource that many use to stay informed on current events and keep up to date with the world daily. In fact, a whopping 86% of U.S. adults frequently obtaining news from digital devices instead of from traditional sources like TV and radio.
Despite this fact, WebAIM reports that only 3% of the internet is entirely accessible to individuals with disabilities, including visual impairments like low vision, blurry vision, and blindness.
In a world where online information is ubiquitous, web accessibility remains a challenge, hindering universal access for all individuals.
The Challenge
How might we make news consumption on the web more efficient, inclusive, and accessible for those with visual impairments?
Our Solution
EchoFeed is our web app that efficiently summarizes news articles and incorporates text-to-speech playback, catering to accessibility needs for the visually impaired and offering enjoyment to a broader user base.
How we built it
The backend takes the news categories, finds relevant news, puts it into AgentHub to summarize the content and returns the summary to the user. React takes the output of AgentHub and reads it to the user.
What's next for EchoFeed
- Text size customizations
- High and low colour contrast customizations
- Ability to save and view headlines from previous days
- Further optimize code for screen readers and other assistive technologies
