Inspiration

The increasing mental health challenges faced by students and teachers inspired us to create a solution that combines technology with compassion. Academic stress, teacher burnout, and the lack of accessible mental health tools are prevalent issues in educational institutions. We envisioned a mobile application that prioritizes emotional well-being, fosters collaboration, and empowers users to manage their mental health effectively.

What it does

EduWell is a mobile application designed to support the mental health of students and teachers. It offers:

  • Daily Check-ins: Simple, interactive questionnaires to monitor emotional well-being.
  • AI Chatbot: A 24/7 virtual companion providing emotional guidance, practical advice, and mental health resources.
  • Class Stress Dashboard: An overview of class-wide stress levels for teachers to make informed decisions and offer support.
  • Workload Management: A tool for school administrators to balance workloads and reduce teacher burnout.
  • Monthly Reports: Visualized data to track mental health trends for students and teachers, aiding in personalized interventions and discussions during parent-teacher or staff meetings.

EduWell’s mobile-first design ensures accessibility, convenience, and seamless integration into daily routines, making it a perfect companion for schools.

How we built it

EduWell’s mobile application was developed with:

  • Frontend: React Native for building a cross-platform mobile app with a user-friendly interface.
  • Backend: Node.js and Express.js for handling server-side operations and APIs.
  • AI Integration: Python-based AI models for the chatbot and stress analysis.
  • Database: PostgreSQL to securely store user responses, reports, and analytics.
  • Cloud Hosting: AWS or Firebase for scalable and secure cloud infrastructure.
  • Push Notifications: Integrated to remind users of daily check-ins and provide timely resources.

Our focus was on creating a smooth, responsive, and secure app that works seamlessly across devices.

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing interactive check-ins that are engaging and non-intrusive for users.
  • Ensuring the AI chatbot provides empathetic and accurate responses to sensitive mental health queries.
  • Developing an effective workload management feature to fairly distribute tasks among teachers.
  • Maintaining user data privacy while offering insights through dashboards and reports.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully developing a mobile app that bridges the gap between mental health and education.
  • Creating a user-friendly and visually appealing interface for both students and teachers.
  • Integrating AI to provide meaningful mental health support and insights.
  • Designing a comprehensive stress monitoring system that enables collaboration between educators, students, and administrators.

What we learned

Building EduWell reinforced the importance of empathy in designing mental health solutions. We gained insights into the unique challenges faced by students and teachers and learned how to use technology to address these issues effectively. Additionally, we enhanced our skills in mobile app development, AI integration, and data visualization.

What's next for EduWell

We aim to take EduWell to the next level with:

  • Gamified Mental Health Activities: To engage students and encourage participation in well-being practices.
  • Peer Support Features: Allowing students and teachers to connect and share experiences in a safe environment.
  • Multilingual Support: Making EduWell accessible to diverse user groups globally.
  • Integration with Wearables: Leveraging fitness and health data from smartwatches for deeper insights.
  • Pilot Programs: Testing the app in schools to gather feedback and optimize functionality.
  • Professional Partnerships: Collaborating with mental health professionals to improve the chatbot and provide expert-backed resources.

EduWell’s mobile application is a step toward revolutionizing mental health in education, creating a healthier and more supportive environment for all.
