Inspiration
As students currently working towards the A-levels, both Stella and I find it difficult to find it to study for long periods of time. In particular, Stella is diagnosed with ADHD, contributing to the challenge of focusing on revision. When discussing our problems, we decided to combine our hobby of games, as it was quite an addicting factor in our lives, with revision, to create a more fun and enjoyable environment for studying. By integrating the concept of those fast games, which don't provide much academic help, and revision flashcards, it created a useful and accessible opportunity to study or revise, despite the environment, while being something that is stimulating, but enriching.
What it does
Enrich combines fun modern games like Wordle and Hangman with revision, offering multiple modes of tests and games for users to try. It also is able to display multiple sets of flashcards, as well as the user to create their own, and customises the games to the different flashcards sets made.
How we built it
A working prototype was coded in Netbeans with Java, as well as a app mockup made on Mockitt, which is working and provides the user interface for trial. The Java netbeans file and QR code to the Mockitt mockup has been attached in a zip file part of the additional information.
Challenges we ran into
For the coded prototype of this project, the majority of it was self taught through online resources, which presented a lot of problem solving challenges throughout. We also had to think about what makes our application unique compared to other revision resources online which have similar aspects. We decided that our application differs from the others as it's not a useful revision method if a student is sitting down and learning, but instead something accessible without online connection, and instead something to us with spare time, such as when taking public transportation. This then helped us develop the idea or quick games which contain the same addicting properties as other applications, however it is a more helpful use of spare time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of how quickly we have adapted to the challenge, learning new parts of coding and algorithmic structures, as well as trialing new designs for applications and learning how to design user interfaces. Since all these recourses we used to create this project were quite new, it required a lot of adapting and overcoming of problems, which we handled quite well.
What we learned
Through this challenge, we improved our coding skills, as well as learnt how to develop app interfaces and design UIs. We also learned how to present a business plan through our presentation, and to overcome the challenges faced earlier.
What's next for Enrich
In the future, Enrich plans to implement more variety within the games, as to continue to grasp our target audiences attention and provide them reason to continue to use the app. We also plan to introduce AI features into the app, as well a providing an AI tutor to students to help with revision. Furthermore, chatrooms and online tournaments will be added to encourage an open platform and community. If this were to be released on the app store, we hope to make it accessible globally, and also as a free resource for all students.
