Inspiration

We knew that disadvantaged students that lack the same resources as their peers fall behind, especially in the special circumstances of the year 2020, and so we sought to level the playing field. We were inspired by khanacademy, a platform to learn many things with tons of content. We realized that there wasn't an easy way to contact others about what you've learned and discuss, and it's hard to decide what to learn.

What it does

Our project includes a discord server, a discord bot (Noctua), and a website. The server is where users can communicate with one another and discuss. The bot gives users practice problems, recommends intriguing talks, courses, and resources for parents and students alike. The website has an invite link to the discord and the bot.

How I built it

The bot was built with Java aided with Javacord. The website was built with HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Flask.

Challenges I ran into

We were going to add a scoreboard of the users that have run the most commands, but we ran out of time. We also had to figure out how to coordinate our efforts, because we were all from different time zones.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm proud of making a working project. For some of us, this was also our first time making a discord bot.

What I learned

We learned a bit more python and java, and Javacord.

What's next for EqualWise

We need to finish the backend. We also hope to gamify the system, enable Noctua to create private 1-on-1 tutoring rooms for students who requested help on a specific subject, and implement a system to offer students the opportunity to tutor their peers in Noctua also.
