Inspiration
Having a healthy is the principal ingredient in becoming the master of your finances. FunClusion teaches real life money management skills that will set you on your way to having a healthy relationship with your money, all in the safety of a game.
What it does
FunClusion teaches players to manage their money through an interactive game where they earn fun-money from playing the game, then choose options to manage those earnings.
How To Play The objective of the game is to earn and grow as much fun-money as possible. The player earns fun-money depending on how well they performed in the game and how well the manage the fun-money earned they've earned. A player plays 6 rounds of the game. After each game round, the player will apply different saving options to save the fun-money earned during that round of the game. Each save option can grow or shrink your saved fun-money depending on the risk and growth potential of the save option. After each subsequent round, the player's fun-money will have grown (or shrunk) depending on the saving option they selected. The player will again choose a save option for the fun-money earned during the round as well as the fun-money that they have already saved, with the goal of getting the most growth. After the 6 rounds of play have been completed, the player's fun-money is totalled. The player can either strive to beat her highest score or a friend's when playing against against a friend.
What You Learn. The save options and their growth potential and risks are intended to simulate real life options as much as possible. Examples of real life option are provided such as choosing a bank savings account, from providers such as TD Bank, B of A, etc or investment options such as E-Trade, VanGuard, etc.
How we built it
The game component of FunClusion is written as a plugin JavaScript. We plan to have the game be plugins so that different games can be created and played. The opions provided are obtained by the game system. On the game system backend we will provide the options and associate examples of those option from our working partners (eg: TD Bank, B of A, E-Trade, VanGuard, etc.)
Challenges we ran into
Understanding the issue and/or the motivation of people that lead to financial exclusion was our primary challenge. Once we defined a common pain point that we could address and designed the concept, we then were met with the technical/time frame challenge of executing the design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to outline the vision of the system and a sample game.
What we learned
Understanding the issues, having a great team and dividing the tasks properly are the key ingredients to executing our vision.
What's next for FunClusion
We will develop FunClusion to have all the features in our MVP plan. This becomes our starting point for improving and fine tuning it by having a full working version that players will use and rate.
