Inspiration

We both have a love for plants and the environment! We wanted to create a platform that could merge together our love for sustainability and a better planet so we created Gardeners Only!

What it does

Gardeners Only allows users to find their hardiness zone (climate zone which details what plants will thrive in your area!) and gives you access to resources which lead you to a successful self-sustainable future.

How we built it

We used Visual Studio Code to help us make an HTML website with Bootstrap, Javascript, and CSS styling! We used GitPages to host the website and registered our domain with domain.com

Challenges we ran into

We are both pretty new to coding so this was a project built from scratch from start to finish! We had a hard time understanding the implementation of grids in HTML and ran into issues trying to link images to external URLs. We also had to figure out how to debug our Javascript!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a website with minimal prior HTML, CSS, Javascript or Bootstrap knowledge! We feel very proud of our learning and growth during this hackathon and are especially proud of how our grids worked. We also learned how to link our images inside of the grids to external website for our resources (Garden Center) tab. We are proud that our code compiled and made our beautiful and functional website! Lastly, we are proud of how far we got in our project and its implementation.

What we learned

We learned how to use Visual Studio Code in combination with HTML, Bootstrap, Javascript and CSS and then implemented these tools in GitPages to deploy our website. We learned about grids in HTML, integrated reference links to external sites, styling functions such as background gradients, creation and additions of PNGs, and creation of javascript functions! We learned how to use resources such as Figma and other design tools (Canva).

What's next for Gardeners Only

Gardeners Only hopes to build up the functionality of the website and integrate more components to add more complexity! We would also love to finish building out our "Get Matched" function and implement a messaging tool (text notifications) so that people can get reminded of when to plant their "Perfect Plant Match"!
