Inspiration
We love food and we want to try more of it! That's what inspired us to create Global Grub.
What it does
Every day, you get new selections and recommendations for recipes from all around the world. Start out by choosing a country or region from a map or go with our country of the day. Global Grub will find three tasty recipes for you to try. You'll find all the ingredients, measurements and step by step instructions right on our webpage.
How we built it
We used ReactJS for the front end and normal Javascript for the back-end. We started with a quick prototype in C# and our project ended up being 70% JavaScript, 19% HTML and 11% CSS. We organized data from the spoonacular API to give recommendations organized by country.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was making the interactive elements, because we didn't have much experience in that. It was also challenging to figure out how to connect the front-end to the back-end.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're super proud of how much we learned during this hackathon. Some of us were writing JavaScript for the very first time. None of us are very experienced web developers, so even though we were all out of our element we perservered, learned, helped each other out and eventually made it to the finish line.
What we learned
We learned a lot about teamwork. Each of us tried to lean in to our strengths when working on our parts of the project and it was super satisfying to see all the different components come together in the end.
What's next for Global Grub
We all had a lot of fun making Global Grub and we hope that you enjoy it. We plan to spend some time putting the finishing touches on the project to make it the best place on the internet to find delicious grub around the globe!
