Inspiration

Doomscrolling on Instagram, and accidentally stumbling upon the catastrophic Los Angeles widlfire sights was a harrowing experience for one of our team members. Having displaced over 200k people, claiming over 11 lives, and causing more than $60bn USD, nature's wrath didn't go unpunished in delivering austerity when environment is neglected.

What it does

GreenCrowd: Where a "crowd" of citizens collaborates to protect the planet while funding and growing green solutions. It's an environmental data marketplace for crowdsourcing data to make environmental information more readily accessible.

GreenCrowd empowers everyday people to take direct action for the environment. From tracking air quality with smartphone sensors to reporting fire sightings and documenting post-fire recovery, users contribute real-time, localized data that drives meaningful change.

Participation is rewarded with GC Credits for eco-friendly perks, while funding comes from corporate partnerships, grants, and subscriptions. Future features include crowdfunding for sustainable projects, AI-powered insights, and optimized evacuation routes.

With GreenCrowd, you’re not just part of the conversation—you’re part of the solution.

How we built it

Using WordPress as our foundation, we integrated Auth0 plugins for a secure and seamless login experience, ensuring user data is protected. The platform's custom features and design were brought to life with HTML and CSS, allowing us to create an intuitive and user-friendly interface.

Challenges we ran into

We started with Node.js but faced dependency conflicts that stalled progress, leading us to pivot to WordPress for a more efficient framework. Integrating the Auth0 plugin presented its own challenges, including configuration complexities and ensuring seamless user authentication. Overcoming these hurdles taught us to adapt quickly and prioritize simplicity without compromising security.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite our lack of prior experience with frameworks like WordPress and tools like Auth0, we built a secure, functional, and intuitive platform. Successfully integrating real-time air quality monitoring and crowdsourced data collection was a huge milestone. Overcoming technical roadblocks while staying focused on our mission proved that determination and adaptability can achieve great things.

What we learned

We learned the importance of thoroughly evaluating frameworks before starting development to avoid dependency issues. Additionally, we gained valuable experience in integrating third-party tools like Auth0 for secure and scalable solutions.

What's next for GreenCrowd

While our platform already addresses immediate challenges with environmental monitoring and incentives, we envision adding more innovative features to scale its impact:

Evacuation Route Optimization: By integrating Google Maps API, we aim to provide real-time evacuation route recommendations during environmental disasters, helping communities stay safe and organized.

AI-Powered Insights and Recommendations: Advanced analytics to make data actionable for users. Using AI, we could provide personalized environmental insights, like neighborhood-level air quality trends, and visualizations through charts and graphs.
