Introduction

Plastic waste has become an alarming predicament, with billions of tons of plastic polluting our land, oceans, and waterways every year. This crisis demands urgent attention and a creative solution.

Our solution? A mobile app that empowers users to take charge of their plastic waste recycling efforts like never before.

GreenWise combines gamification with AI-powered image recognition technology to identify various types of recyclable plastics while earning points, making it more motivating than ever for users to sort their waste correctly.

Inspiration

Our journey began with a shared concern for the growing plastic waste crisis. Witnessing the devastating impact on our environment motivated us to create a tangible solution that empowers individuals to actively contribute to a greener future.

What it does

GreenWise revolutionizes plastic waste recycling by introducing a mobile app that turns recycling into an engaging game. Users can effortlessly capture images of plastic items, and our AI-powered technology swiftly identifies the type of plastic. The app then offers tailored recycling guidelines and rewards users with points for their eco-friendly choices.

How we built it

To bring our vision to life, we harnessed the power of Flutter, crafting a seamless and user-friendly mobile application. The backbone of our innovation is a TensorFlow-powered machine learning model, trained on a diverse Kaggle dataset. Through the Teachable Machine platform, we fine-tuned the model's ability to accurately distinguish between recyclable and non-recyclable plastics.

Challenges we ran into

Navigating the intricacies of machine learning integration and optimizing user experience proved to be our primary challenges. Our technical issues ranged from problems with integrating libraries for our ML model, to ensuring a responsive and consistent design layout across multiple device dimensions. Merging our AI classification backend with an interactive user interface presented yet another set of obstacles, requiring a lot of fine-tuning to unite the two components. Due to time constraints, we had to prioritize certain features, resulting in some of the more elaborate elements from our prototype not making it into the final minimum viable product. These challenges, while demanding, ultimately enriched our learning experience and solidified our teamwork.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are immensely proud to have transformed an ambitious idea into a functional reality. The successful integration of AI image recognition, the creation of a gamified experience, and the potential positive impact on the environment stand as testaments to our dedication.

What we learned

Our journey taught us the power of teamwork, innovation, and perseverance. We deepened our understanding of AI technologies, refined our app development skills, and gained insights into the importance of creating meaningful user experiences.

Go-to Market Strategy

Our strategy involves launching GreenWise on app stores, leveraging social media to reach environmentally conscious users, and partnering with schools and eco-awareness events to amplify our reach. As user engagement grows, our platform is scalable in line with demand. Our AI-powered image recognition technology can be continuously improved as our user base expands, enhancing accuracy and expanding the range of recyclable plastics identified. Beyond offering a free version with essential features, we plan to introduce premium subscriptions that unlock advanced tools and exclusive rewards. As our app gains traction and establishes a strong user community, collaborations with local recycling centers and vendors that align with our eco-friendly values will contribute to our profitability.

What's next for GreenWise

Our vision extends beyond the hackathon. We plan to enhance the app's machine learning capabilities, expand our recycling database to support other types of wastes such as glasses, metals, and paper, and implement user feedback for continuous improvement. We aim to foster a community of eco-warriors united by a shared goal: a cleaner, more sustainable planet.
