Gyatword

Gyatword is an engaging daily crossword puzzle game that challenges your knowledge of "brainrot", or gen Alpha, urban slang. Developed collaboratively by a team of four passionate developers in a short span of 24 hours (NUS Hacknroll), Gyatword aims to provide users with an exciting and challenging word game experience.

Most crosswords available online today, such as the New York Times, require a more advanced grasp of the english vocabulary and thus cater to an older audience. Gyatword thus primarily serves to entertain the younger generation today by testing their knowledge on popular slang and pop culture through a very unique crossword. However, our team also felt that many non gen-alphas struggle to keep up with the ever-increasing, confusing lingo adopted by the younger generation. As such, Gyatword also aims to bridge this gap and allow the older generation to understand the culture and humour of the younger generation, especially those with children.

The project was built with a React frontend and our own backend server, supported by various aforementioned technologies such as a robust Supabase data management system. We utilised existing react components and open-sourced crossword-making algorithms to handle the logic and core feature of our game, using these in addition to our own creativity, ingenuity and technical skills to craft together a minimalistic user interface with a fun fully-functional game. An interesting feature of our project is it is an amalgamation of various programming languages, such as React, Python, Pygyat, Typescript, Scala, Tailwind etc.
