Inspiration

I feel that we are all guilty of using single use plastic water bottles. 1 in 6 of these bottles are fully recycled, therefore the remainder ends up in the landfill. HyH2O aims to change the users habits to carry around a re-usable water bottle when travelling. It increases the production and use of eco-friendly, reusable water bottles and public water fountains. It helps reduce the consumption of single use plastic water bottles!

What it does

Once entered, you are prompted with the app asking for permissions, the most important being your location. The app would allow you to browse through where the nearest fountain is, or notify you when you are beside a water fountain. It gives a detailed description and photo of its location and appearance. If a user finds a station that is not on the map, they can submit its location through our app.

How we built it

Prototype using proto.io, a fellow PTC Hacks sponsor :)

Challenges we ran into

I had other commitments this weekend, such as weekend language classes and other extracurricular commitments but this concept has been on my mind for a while. I did not have time to learn a new language for app dev but if I did, I would have used Swift.

What we learned

Proto.io is a new platform for me and it was fun to use something other than Figma!

What's next for HyH2O

I hope to code it fully into a minimum viable product and add motivation features. These would include in-app currency, for scanning a QR code located on the station or finding a new station. There would also be a profile section that calculates how many times you refilled your water bottle or how many bottles you replaced. Eg. You replaced 2035 single-use plastic water bottles this year!
