Inspiration
The inspiration for Records of IONA (ROI) comes from my personal experience as a caregiver for my grandmother, who had dementia. Watching my mom navigate the constant changes and stress of caregiving showed me how hard it is to keep up with evolving care needs. Dementia progresses quickly, and making informed decisions without real-time insights can be overwhelming. I wanted to build something that could ease that burden — an app that empowers caregivers with actionable data, helping them provide the best possible care while protecting their own well-being.
What It Does
ROI bridges the gap between fragmented health data and everyday caregiving. It integrates EHRs through MeldRx, connects to devices like BP monitors and glucometers, and captures caregiver inputs via text, voice, audio, and video. The app translates this data into plain-language insights, detects evolving care needs, and monitors caregiver stress. Caregivers can easily access their loved ones' updated records, receive proactive care recommendations, and stay ahead of health changes — all in one seamless platform.
How We Built It
IONA Software We developed ROI with Flutter, ensuring compatibility with iOS, Android, and a web version for the competition. Initially, we planned to delay EHR integration for 1-2 years due to its complexity — but MeldRx changed everything. It simplified FHIR integration, allowing us to make health records a foundational feature right away. We combined this with our Care Needs Algorithm and Stress Algorithm, which analyze both historical and real-time data to generate predictive insights.

Challenges We Ran Into
**"Our biggest challenge was figuring out how to present complex health data in a simple, intuitive design. Caregivers don’t have time to decode medical jargon, so we focused on human-centered design. Understanding the intricacies of FHIR standards and EHR interoperability was another hurdle, but MeldRx's resources and webinars guided us through it. Prioritizing features was tough, too — deciding what would make the most immediate impact took thoughtful iteration.
We initially had some challenges integrating API calls and managing patient access within our Flutter build. The upside was that the Flutter code wasn’t built until we started the hackathon, which actually accelerated our progress as we pitched and refined the product. After seeing what we could do with the data — and how much we could access — we ran into scope creep, wanting to add even more functionality than we originally planned."**
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
We’re incredibly proud that we turned a vision into a tangible product. Successfully integrating FHIR records and launching across multiple platforms was a huge win, especially given our initial concerns about EHR complexity. We’re also proud of the AI algorithms we built, which lay the groundwork for future enhancements. But most of all, we’re proud that ROI has the potential to make caregiving less stressful, more proactive, and deeply human-centered.
What We Learned
We learned that EHR integration is more accessible than we thought — with the right tools, even small teams can achieve it. We also discovered the importance of data security and know we’ll need to strengthen that as we move forward. And we learned the power of community support — the MeldRx webinars and connections with experts helped us build faster, smarter, and with greater confidence.
What’s Next for ROI by HeartBeatFam
Next, we’ll pilot ROI with healthcare agencies, gathering real-world feedback to refine the app. We’ll pursue HIPAA compliance, enhance security, and expand device integrations. We want to refine our AI models further and explore features for collaborative care teams.
Recently, we met an Occupational Therapist who expressed interest in helping polish the User Experience for the Clinician market, with a particular focus on Occupational Therapy. She also wants to offer IONA as a tool within her network of clinicians, expanding its reach and impact in the field.
Our long-term vision is for ROI to become a global care ecosystem — a platform that empowers caregivers everywhere, from families and private caregivers to clinicians, helping them navigate care with confidence, compassion, and the insights they need to thrive.
