Our Slogan Don't let the bill kill you !
Our Goal We want to simplify the life of our users.
How it works By taking a shot of a bill our App extracts all the element from the receipt together with the quantity and the price. Then you select the people you intend to split the bill with as each one of them selects his items. The app has the possibility to also split one single product: For example, if you and two friends buy a bottle of wine but each one of you is getting a burger too, then the wine’s price is split in three and added to the burger’s price to give you the amount / person to be paid.
Challenges we ran into We actually had a pretty slow start because one of us had issues with the Gradle Scripts in Android Studio and we had to first sort that out. We definitely had some time management issues and the sleep deprivation didn’t help much. Apart from that, of course we struggled a bit with technologies that were new to us, like extracting the items from a picture, but that was expected after all.
Accomplishments that we are proud of After we brainstormed for a bit we had a few project ideas and, even though we chose a challenging one, we managed to accomplish almost everything we had in mind. Another thing that was really pleasing was that we managed to get along quite well and work as a team despite not knowing each other before the hackathon. Each of us learned a lot and we guess that’s the most rewarding aspect.
What we learned We did learn some pretty cool new technical stuff, but we also improved our teamwork skills and some of us even learned a new markup language on the spot. We also learned that food is distracting.
What’s next for Kill Bill In an upgraded version, Kill Bill would be account based so you would have to set up an account and you could also have like a friends list where you have the people you usually go out with and frequently split bills with. One really good improvement we thought about is linking it up with a bank account so the transactions for splitting the bill can be made automatically inside the app. There is also space for improvement on data structuring aspects so we can switch from a basic BLOB storage to more structured databases.
