Inspiration
We realized when we were brainstorming education apps that we are often in big classes and miss out on meeting a lot of our classmates, many of whom could potentially be good friends and study mates. That's why we built Learnr, a study group finder that caters to an individual's classes, skill level, and schedule.
What it does
Learnr allows you to enter a class, your skill level in that class, and other details about what you want from a study group (when you meet, how often a week, group size, etc.). With that information, it matches you with similar students, and puts you together in a semi-anonymous chat room - your name is hidden, but your gender, major, and year are visible. After a short trial period to get to know each other a little, you can decide whether you want to stick with this group or not, and proceed to plan study sessions in your concurrent free time.
How I built it
We prototyped a design in Ionic Creator, then downloaded the source files it generated and incorporated our logic, routing changes, controllers, server interactions, etc. as well some UI cleanup.
Challenges I ran into
Making push notifications and server-side groups processing work broke some stuff for weird security reasons (?), so we had a bit of troubleshooting to get through there.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
It looks rather smooth and polished for something we made over a weekend, if a little plain. I'm pretty pleased with how the interface turned out.
What I learned
Less sleep, more work? jk. I like living
What's next for Learnr
Hmm. If we finish this app I'm pretty sure we could successfully release it, and college students would use it. Perhaps we'll continue developing it in our free time and eventually try to build it into a free app for college students, with ad revenue for profit ofc ;)
