Inspiration

Likita stems from the healthcare challenges faced by rural communities, particularly in Gembu and its surrounding areas. My personal experience emerge when i lost my sibling because we couldn't find any doctor at a Hospital after trekking miles carrying him since 2018, Also a recent experience when i was called by an Aunt at about 11pm this year to help look for and alert a Hospital due to an accident that happened over 11km away and they were able to care for the victims because the Health workers were already waiting for their arrival. Limited access to medical professionals, long distances to the nearest hospital, and lack of timely medical attention can be life-threatening. This platform was designed to bridge the gap between medical services and underserved populations by providing a solution that brings healthcare closer to the people using technology.

What it does

Likita connects health professionals, doctors, and hospitals with patients remotely. Through the platform, patients can book appointments, access remote consultations, and receive diagnoses and prescriptions for common ailments. It stores patient medical records, enabling healthcare providers to offer personalized care and ensuring continuity of care. Additionally, it helps manage hospital workflows by integrating appointment scheduling and consultation management into one streamlined system.

How we built it

The Likita was built using a combination of PHP for the back-end functionality, ensuring secure and efficient handling of requests, MySQL for database management to store patient information, medical records, and hospital data, JavaScript, HTML and CSS for front-end design, providing a clean, user-friendly interface. Collaboration between developers, healthcare experts, and local community leaders played a crucial role in tailoring the platform to meet the unique needs of the region.

Challenges we ran into

Infrastructure Limitations: Many areas in Gembu have limited internet access, making it crucial to develop a lightweight system that could work efficiently in low-bandwidth environments.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Successfully creating a platform that is user-friendly and accessible to healthcare providers and patients in rural areas. Implementing secure medical records management that ensures continuity of care and data privacy. Overcoming technical challenges related to connectivity and delivering a functional platform for areas with limited internet infrastructure.

What we learned

Through the development of Likita, we learned the importance of building technology that is not only functional but also accessible and scalable to meet the unique needs of rural communities. Additionally, we learned that integrating healthcare technology into regions with limited infrastructure requires continuous feedback from both users and experts. The experience has also highlighted the importance of data security and the need for user-friendly interfaces when working with sensitive medical information.

What's next for Likita

The future of Likita includes expanding the platform's features to cover more healthcare services, such as telemedicine, emergency alerts, and integration with mobile devices for broader access. We also aim to improve the platform’s adaptability to even lower bandwidth settings, allowing for widespread usage in more rural areas. Further development will include adding real-time language translation to better serve the multilingual communities of Gembu and incorporating AI-driven diagnostics to assist doctors with faster and more accurate decision-making.
