Inspiration
Whether you are a regular discord user or not, You must have heard about the downfall of Groovy, Rhythm and many more discord music bots. They all suffered the inevitable fate of using copyrighted music to stream in voice channels. Hence, the idea of a music discord bot that plays music and adheres to all copyright laws was born.
What it does
The initial idea was to have it play music. However, we wanted to make our bot unique and at random intervals the audio is interrupted with a clip of RICK ASTLEY'S NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP song. A gif of the world-renowned Rick Astley dance is also sent in the chat.
How we built it
We had the artistically skilled team members draw and edit the custom gifs by hand and it was then animated in Adobe Photoshop frame by frame. Meanwhile, the rest of the team worked on implementing the bot and its features through javascript.
Challenges we ran into
We encountered several difficulties along the way from missing packages to outdated syntax which ultimately caused further issues and confusion. In the end, we had successfully managed to get the bot to respond to messages, post gifs and join voice chats without muting itself however we have ultimately failed to get it to play music.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This was the first hackathon for some of our team members, and the 2nd hackathon to others in the team. We knew nothing about discord bots and we still managed to implement one and modify it. Team member artistic ability and editing skills.
What we learned
How to add and control the behaviours of discord bots as well as a fair amount of javascript which we aren't typically accustomed to.
