Inspiration

Many of our team members work with or have close family members that are elderly. All of us have seen technology begin to become a harmful feature in their lives.

For many college students waking up and scrolling through their phone is an automatic morning ritual, sometimes continuing for hours. According to IDC, 80% of smartphone users check their mobile phones within 15 minutes of waking up.

When it comes to the elderly, this can become a habit that becomes very difficult to break. Seniors often have less opportunities for socialization, and physical activity and health becomes much more sensitive to change.

For many seniors, technology can become an addictive reliance that's hard to change. Mainichi aims to break this cycle by creating a completely analogous morning.

What it does

Mainichi is inspired by vintage radios, and has several different functions that allow the user to have a productive morning.

  • News
  • Music
  • Voice Memos
  • Weather Mainichi takes the focus away from endless scrolling, letting the user enjoy their life day by day.

How we built it

The box is cherry veneer wood, cut with a laser cutter and engraved with a laser engraver. The knobs are aluminum and carved with a manual lathe. A vertical mill with an end mill drill bit is used to create a hole for the raspberry pi switch dial.

Challenges we ran into

Manufacturing the D shape in the aluminum dial for the switch dial. We used set screws to hold it in place. Creating round corners of the box.

After everything we've been through, Microcenter not carrying our parts, our wood catching fire multiple times, our joints not etching properly, getting aluminum chips to the face....

I just want to say I love my mom and my dad.
