Inspiration

Our original idea was to create a website which hosted forums of articles separated by subject. However, we quickly realized that a note-taking platform would naturally generate a rich network of shared knowledge. Inspired by apps like Obsidian, which lack a searchable global database, we saw an opportunity to create a community where everyone's notes contribute to a collective, easily accessible resource.

What it does

Netherite is a community-driven platform designed to make knowledge sharing effortless. Users can seamlessly share their notes, receive valuable feedback, and contribute to a growing, peer-verified network of information. For this, we built a powerful rich-text note-taking platform with a sleek, minimalist UI that rivals top-end competitors.

To make finding relevant information effortless, we developed an AI-driven semantic vector search that uses the context of your notes to pull the most relevant and high-quality snippets from others, eliminating the need to sift through pages of content.

How we built it

Netherite was developed using Next.js for a fast, dynamic interface and Firebase for real-time data and secure user management. We integrated Pinecone for AI-powered vector search, using contextual relevance. The rich-text editor is powered by Tiptap, and we used the Gemini API to summarize multiple sources.

Challenges we ran into

Working with Next.js Server Components was new to us, and Vector Search is a new technology, which presented us with challenges initially.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This isn't just a project for us. We’re building something we would actually use. We value minimalism and cutting-edge technology, and Netherite blends both.

What we learned

We learned to plan and organize, created a Figma prototype, and became more efficient in building a consistent interface.

What's next for Netherite

We see Netherite as the GitHub for notes, becoming exponentially more useful as more people join. Unlike unreliable answers from LLMs, Netherite aims to establish a peer-verified repository of notes through a robust feedback system, offering powerful tools to find precisely what you need.
