Inspiration The world is becoming too productive. Everyone’s hustling, grinding, time-blocking, and maximizing ROI on their pomodoro breaks. Disgusting. We decided enough was enough — someone had to fight back. So we built NGMI Distractor: an app dedicated to destroying your focus, derailing your workflow, and reminding you that you were never gonna make it anyway.

What it does The world is becoming too productive. Everyone’s hustling, grinding, time-blocking, and maximizing ROI on their pomodoro breaks. Disgusting. We decided enough was enough—someone had to fight back. So we built NGMI Distractor: an app dedicated to destroying your focus, derailing your workflow, and reminding you that you were never gonna make it anyway.

How we built it We built NGMI Distractor using Python as the core language for logic and orchestration. For the GUI and popups, we used Tkinter and easygui to create interactive distraction windows. We integrated AppleScript with Python to detect active Chrome tabs, and psutil to monitor running processes. For advanced features, AppKit for better window management on macOS. The system is modular, with each distraction type implemented as its own module, making it easy to extend and adapt.

Challenges we ran into It turns out building something that actively annoys people is harder than it sounds. During testing, NGMI Distractor became way more irritating than we expected — popups multiplied, memes got chaotic, and our own productivity took a nosedive. At one point, we were almost driven to madness ourselves. Designing an app to destroy focus is easy. Surviving your own creation… that’s the real challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We turned a ridiculous idea into a working chaos machine. NGMI Distractor now successfully interrupts workflows, pops up memes, hijacks your focus, and generally makes sure productivity dies a slow, painful death. After lots of testing, tweaking, and surviving the annoyance ourselves, NGMI is officially ready to ruin your future. What we learned Don’t study. Don’t let others study. Productivity is overrated anyway. We learned that chaos is way more fun than focus, and that interrupting someone’s workflow is an art form worth perfecting. NGMI Distractor isn’t just an app—it’s a philosophy.

What's next for NGMI We’re dreaming big. Next version of NGMI Distractor will include a “virus mode” — not a real virus, of course (we don’t want jail time)… but something close enough to completely destroy your computer. Think popups that never stop, memes that consume every corner of your screen, and a chaos engine so powerful it might just rewrite your life. NGMI 2.0: productivity’s worst nightmare.
