Inspiration

The inspiration behind Nyay stemmed from a deep understanding of the critical need for comprehensive support for undertrial prisoners. Recognizing the vulnerabilities and challenges they face, we were motivated to create a holistic digital solution that integrates legal aid, rehabilitation, community support, and seamless access to resources. Our aim was to reduce recidivism and empower individuals with tools that enhance their legal knowledge, mental well-being, and prospects for a successful reintegration into society.

What it does

Nyay is a multifaceted platform designed to offer undertrial prisoners access to legal assistance, rehabilitation programs, and community resources. It provides a user-friendly interface for case management, direct communication with legal teams, and a robust support system for post-release reintegration. The platform incorporates AI/ML for lawyer matching based on affordability, VR-based educational tools for rehabilitation, a chatbot for legal advice, and automated court date reminders. Furthermore, it serves as a repository for legal resources, inmate education, and an organized complaint file accessible to both users and UTRC authorities.

How we built it

Our team integrated various technologies and expertise to develop Nyay. The platform was built using a combination of web development frameworks, AI/ML algorithms for lawyer matching, VR technologies for the rehabilitation module, and a structured database system to ensure the secure and organized storage of legal information. The legal advice chatbot was trained on the Indian Penal Code system to provide accurate guidance. Collaboration with legal experts, psychologists, and technologists allowed us to create a user-centric and robust system.

Challenges we ran into

The journey to create Nyay was not without its challenges. Integrating various technologies while ensuring data security and privacy was a complex task. Designing and implementing the VR-based rehabilitation module to engage users effectively required extensive testing and user feedback. Developing a comprehensive and accurate database of legal resources and IPCs was another challenge, requiring meticulous curation and verification of information.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are immensely proud of creating a platform that addresses multifaceted needs, bridging the gap between undertrial prisoners and essential support services. Nyay's comprehensive nature, combining legal aid, rehabilitation, and a user-friendly interface, is an accomplishment we take pride in. Our success in implementing AI/ML for lawyer matching and creating an effective VR-based education system for inmates has been a significant milestone.

What we learned

Throughout the development of Nyay, we learned the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the impact of technology in addressing social challenges. We gained insights into the complexities of legal systems and the significance of holistic rehabilitation in reducing recidivism. Additionally, we learned about the power of user feedback and iterative design in creating a more effective and user-centric platform.

What's next for Nyay

Moving forward, we aim to expand Nyay's reach and functionality. We plan to incorporate more languages and legal systems to cater to a broader demographic. Enhancements to the VR-based rehabilitation module and further improvements in AI algorithms for lawyer matching are in the pipeline. Additionally, we aspire to create more robust and intuitive interfaces for both undertrial prisoners and legal teams, fostering a stronger collaboration and support system. Ultimately, our goal is to continually evolve Nyay to better serve and support undertrial prisoners, empowering them for a smoother reintegration into society.
