🧠 Inspiration

We’ve all sent messages we immediately regretted — an overly blunt email to a boss, a passive-aggressive text to a friend, or a painfully awkward DM on a dating app. Most people don’t need grammar correction — they need tone correction.

That’s where Oops.ai was born — a tool to help people rewrite cringey, confusing, or cold messages into something smart, funny, or emotionally intelligent. The goal? Save relationships, salvage job offers, and avoid digital embarrassment — with a smile.

💬 What It Does

Oops.ai takes any message you paste — text, email, DM, tweet — and instantly rewrites it based on your chosen tone:

🔧 How We Built It

  • Frontend: Built with Bolt.new, leveraging its no-code UI builder for fast prototyping and custom UX

  • AI Engine: We integrated Mistral Small 3.2 24B via OpenRouter API to handle tone-aware rewriting and response generation

  • API Integration: A simple backend endpoint handles user input and tone type, calls the OpenRouter API, and returns structured responses

  • UX Design: Multiple tone modes, copy-to-clipboard features, and real-time results in a single clean interface

  • Deployment: Hosted via Netlify and tagged with “Built with Bolt.new”

🚧 Challenges We Ran Into

  • Tone control is nuanced: Getting AI to balance humor, professionalism, and empathy required several rounds of prompt tuning and user testing.

  • API latency and formatting: Integrating Mistral smoothly into the Bolt.new environment with consistent output structure (rewritten + follow-up) took some backend wrangling.

  • Making it fun without being gimmicky: We wanted the experience to feel lighthearted, but still valuable and useful — especially in professional use cases.

🏆 Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

  • Built a fully working, production-ready app that genuinely solves a daily human problem

  • Created a tone-smart rewriting system that feels more like a friend than a robot

  • Successfully integrated external LLM (Mistral) with Bolt.new for a seamless UX

  • Tested across real use cases (job emails, DMs, awkward apologies) and got great reactions

📚 What We Learned

  • Tone and emotional nuance are just as important as correctness in communication tools

  • Even small UX decisions (e.g., emoji on tone buttons) massively influence how fun and usable the app feels

  • Bolt.new is incredibly fast for prototyping, but pairing it with custom AI pipelines unlocks serious power

  • Prompt engineering is an art — and the key to AI usefulness

  • Chrome Extension: Highlight any message in Gmail, LinkedIn, Twitter → click “Oops” to rewrite in context

  • Voice Playback: Use ElevenLabs to speak the rewritten messages in different voices (e.g., “sarcastic coworker,” “chill friend”)

  • Custom Modes: Add specific use-case packs like “First Message Magic” (for dating) or “Passive-Aggressive to Friendly”

  • User Accounts: Add history, favorite tones, and custom personas via Supabase

  • Go Viral: Launch on Reddit and Product Hunt with a meme-driven campaign
