Inspiration
I have been a teacher/tutor since I was seventeen. Throughout my experience, I have consistently found that my students have struggled with navigating how to pursue their dream career and which college plan would work best for them.
What it does
Using either the search bar or the metrics filter, there are two methods curated for the user to find the best path to achieve their dream job. In the search bar, students would look up their dream career and then see, beginning with Miami Dade College, and potentially showcasing other institutions, what they need, where they would need to go, and who they would need to reach out to in order to pursue their dream job.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, and Vanilla JavaScript for the front-end with dynamic filtering, search suggestions, and modal details. Then we built a script to web-scrape Miami-Dade's Academic Programs page to return to our user the program overview, classes that are necessary, and the related academic advisors to contact.
Challenges we ran into
We had alot of trouble connecting the API to the website and getting it to properly transfer the data to the web application.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Finally getting the website to work properly with user input.
What we learned
I learned more about Flask, a lightweight open-source micro web framework for Python. It helps developers build web applications. I also learned about problem-solving and AI integration.
What's next for Pathway Planner
Integrating it into MDC's current website so students and young adults can benefit from this.
