Inspiration
Now more than ever, the world is politically polarized. Twitter's now even more infamous as a hub for toxicity on the internet. We wanted to create an online discourse platform that would expose users to new ideas and encourage respectful debate.
What it does
Responseble allows users to post their takes on political issues in a respectful environment. Using NLP, posts are scanned for toxic intent before they make it onto the platform. And by associating a political leaning with each user by tracking their interaction with the platform, it exposes users to more ideas from the other side of the aisle. It also has a featured section on the home page that highlights which topics are most cared about by the left and right based on user interactions.
How we built it
We developed a Next.JS web application to be accessible from the web and mobile. We use Firebase for the backend database and user authentication. We used Co:here's NLP platform to judge comments for toxic intent, and bounce their comments.
Challenges we ran into
This was our first Next.JS app and our first Firebase app. We were learning a lot as we went. It even took a lot of learning on the fly to get the API calls to work properly. We learned a lot!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have a beautiful interactive UI, and we got the firebase database and user tracking working! We also used AI for the first time which was super exciting.
What we learned
We learned A TON about using Firebase and how NEXT.Js can improve our react projects. We were even beginners at querying APIs.
What's next for responsible
We didn't have time to deploy to the internet, but we will do that shortly! This project can hopefully be inspiring to other developers and people who care about having a more connected and empathetic political landscape.
