Inspiration

Managing medication and accessing medical data can be cumbersome, especially for individuals with chronic conditions or those requiring frequent monitoring. We wanted to create a seamless, secure, and smart solution that simplifies healthcare while reducing medication errors. Inspired by the growing need for digital health solutions, RxID integrates RFID technology into a wearable bracelet, ensuring effortless access to medical records and automated medication dispensing.

What it does

RxID is an RFID-powered bracelet that securely stores medical data and automates medication management. By scanning the bracelet, healthcare providers, emergency responders, or caregivers can instantly access critical medical information, ensuring accurate and timely care.

The system also includes a smart pill dispenser that automatically dispenses the correct quantity of medication based on the user’s prescription schedule when the RFID bracelet is scanned, reducing the risk of missed doses or incorrect medication administration.

Additionally, doctors, EMS personnel, and authorized healthcare professionals can update prescriptions, add new medical history, allergies, and emergency notes to a patient's secure digital profile. These updates sync in real-time, allowing for dynamic medical record management that ensures patients always receive the most accurate and up-to-date care.

How we built it

We designed RxID using a combination of RFID technology, embedded systems, and Firebase. The hardware includes:

  • An RFID-enabled bracelet that securely stores and retrieves patient medical data.
  • A smart pill dispenser that releases the precise quantity of medication when the RFID bracelet is scanned, following a pre-programmed prescription schedule.
  • A pill catapulter to make taking your medication fun
  • A secure cloud platform (Firebase) that allows doctors and EMS personnel to update patient records, prescriptions, allergies, and emergency notes in real-time.

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing a compact, efficient, and durable RFID bracelet for everyday use.
  • Creating a reliable medication dispensing mechanism that accurately delivers the correct dose based on the prescription.
  • Enabling real-time syncing so that doctors and EMS can modify patient prescriptions and medical history on the go.
  • Integrating the app with the Firebase database with the Raspberry Pi and other hardware components

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully developing a working prototype that integrates RFID with a smart medication dispensing system.
  • Implementing secure, encrypted data storage to protect medical records.
  • Creating a user-friendly, non-invasive design that ensures accessibility for all users.
  • Developing a reliable pill dispensing mechanism that ensures accurate doses based on prescriptions.

What we learned

  • How to optimize RFID technology for healthcare applications.
  • The challenges of designing a hardware-software integrated solution for real-world medical use.
  • The complexity involved in building a precise, automated medication dispensing system.
  • The need for usability and accessibility in healthcare technology to ensure widespread adoption.
  • How real-time medical record updates can significantly improve emergency and long-term healthcare management.

What's next for RxID

  • Expanding cloud integration for real-time remote healthcare provider access.
  • Exploring biometric authentication for added security and personalized healthcare.
  • Collaborating with healthcare institutions and pharmacies to expand adoption and real-world testing.
  • Improving the pill dispenser to support multiple types of medication for complex prescriptions.
  • Integrating AI-driven alerts and recommendations to assist doctors in modifying treatment plans based on patient adherence and health trends.
  • Enabling EMR (Electronic Medical Records) integration to allow hospitals and clinics to sync patient data directly with RxID.
