Inspiration

A dish-washing race. I don't really enjoy washing dishes so I often leave it untill I feel like it. One time, my friend and I both had to wash dishes so we decided to race to who completed it the fastest. Not only was that fun, but it got me motivated to do something I dislike doing. This inspired Satsuma. Sometimes, like doing dishes, I often leave doing homework untill the very last minute, but I feel like with Satsuma, there would be a fun competition to get me and my peers to be productive and be motivated to do our work.

What it does

Satsuma is a Chrome Extension aiming to help students and people in the workplace with productivity (and motivation) by making it more fun to complete assigned tasks.

Satsuma, a Friendly Competition Extension

  • Using fun and positive competition between friends and coworkers to enhance productivity
    • Shared task lists
    • Points, milestones and leaderboards
    • Host-decided rewards and incentives
    • Notifies you when someone surpasses you on the leaderboard
    • Weekly insights on top members

Satsuma, also a Keep-on-Top-of-Your-Work Extension

  • Reminding you when something is due soon and you haven’t completed it yet
    • Provides statistics on the percentage of the group that has completed each task and the progress of the average member

How we built it

We built this using HTML, JS, and CSS with Qoom and designed and planned everything with Figma. We first planned everything with Figma, then added the design. While doing that, the other teammates were doing the back-end and the logic. We were trying to use Qoom's database but we soon realized even if we were familiar with it, we wouldn't have enough time to code everything (since even just the account making/login part took a long time), so we decided just to make a mock-up that would work similarly to how our envisioned one would.

Challenges we ran into

  • we were new to using databases
  • coming up with a too complicated idea
  • coming up with too many ideas
  • not spending time well (we spend too much time attempting to do the back end instead of focusing on the mockup)

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • the ui :blobaww:

What we learned

  • javascript, using qoom, and figma!

What's next for satsuma

  • Customize
    • Shop for incentives
    • Custom point weighing
    • Custom reminders to complete tasks
    • Custom notifications
  • Flexibly create new for hosts/users:
    • Groups
    • Tasks
    • Subtasks
    • Real time statistics (for notifs, leaderboard, etc)
    • Participant kick option
  • Extras

    • Requiring a strong password
    • Forgot password
    • Using Google Classroom to sync assignments/tasks
    • Error trapping (like no internet connection)

    • Provide a way for user feedback
