Inspiration
We were inspired by Spacewar! to create a round play environment with a gravitational center. But instead of space, we happened to choose a toilet. And instead of spaceships, we used a pirate ship and a navy ship.
How it works
Scatstorm is a two-player versus game where both players are being sucked into the center of the toilet bowl and must use their momentum to stay out. If one player gets sucked in, the other player wins. The players can also fire toilet-themed missiles at each other, which stun the other player temporarily, preventing them temporarily from avoiding getting sucked in. Finally, there are also random pieces of debris falling on the play field, which also have the effect of stunning players.
Challenges I ran into
The vortex mathematics was quite complicated. We went for a traditional orbit equation, but this doesn't exactly match the gameplay we would have wanted. Also, the bowl is slightly 3D, sloping inward toward the center of the bowl. That helps with the vortex, but also has some unpredictable glitches, like boats sometimes flying out of the bowl altogether.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
The 3D art in the game turned out quite well. It has a nice bathroom-themed direction that is also functional.
What I learned
Programmed collisions and physics are better than Unity's built-in physics any day.
What's next for Scatstorm
I am considering re-making Scatstorm, in a 2D rather than 3D form. That's what would suit it better, I think.
