💡 Inspiration

Everyone loves fresh food — strawberries, tomatoes, mushrooms — but they all start with one thing: good compost.

Our inspiration came from a very personal place. Luke’s 90-year-old grandpa (“Opa”) used to be a mushroom farmer in Ontario. To get quality compost, he would drive 3 hours to the RCMP horse stables by Lake Ontario just to shovel horse poop into his truck. It was gross, exhausting, and wildly inefficient — yet it was the only option.

At the same time, restaurants throw away hundreds of thousands of tonnes of food scraps every year. And gardeners are buying bagged compost at the store.

We realized: this is a broken system — but it doesn’t have to be.

🧩 What It Does

Scrapple is a fun, simple MVP that connects restaurants with gardeners and small farmers who want compost.

Restaurants post their compostable scraps (e.g., coffee grounds, carrot tops, eggshells).

Gardeners browse scraps near them, filtered by type and location.

They claim pickups or coordinate drop-offs.

We track compost weight, reward users with fun badges, and start closing the loop.

It’s like Uber for compost — but with less surge pricing and more worm jokes.

🛠️ How We Built It

We used Lovable’s Subspace low-code framework to quickly scaffold the MVP:

Restaurant-facing scrap listing form

Geo-filtered compost discovery for gardeners

Claim + pickup tracking system

A compost impact tracker for positive feedback

Lovable helped us generate the scaffolding fast so we could focus on UX, storytelling, and the actual connections between waste and growth.

🧠 Challenges We Ran Into

Designing a two-sided marketplace that feels equally simple for restaurants and gardeners

Keeping the product hyperlocal and lightweight while still extensible

🚀 Accomplishments We’re Proud Of

Got a working MVP demo up in a weekend

Made a compost platform that even Luke’s 90-year-old Opa used (and loved)

Created a design system and product that’s fun, emotional, and story-driven

📈 What’s Next

We’re excited to take Scrapple further:

Add group pickups, compost hubs, and community garden integrations

Launch in real local networks to test adoption

Explore carbon offset tracking and city partnerships

Maybe even get Opa on the growth team
