Inspiration

Because most businesses and schools are currently being conducted remotely, the problem that arises is that people still need to look presentable during these online virtual meetings or classes. With barber shops being closed, a common problem that most individuals are facing is the lack of skill to cut their own hair and has led to failed attempts.

What it does

Our product consists of both a hardware and software section. The headset is a 3D printed stabilizer which also mounts seven different cameras that stream the video data to our app. On the app, users select what type of haircut they want and the app uses this information as well as the video stream from all the cameras to give you detailed step-by-step instructions about what steps to take and where to cut. In conclusion, we developed a solution that would help parents, teachers, and students who are conducting their daily activities through virtual meetings and are unable to cut their own hair.

How I built it

We used AutoDesk Fusion 360 to build the model that we designed and we used Wix to develop the website. Finally we used iMovie Video Editor to make our video. We currently plan to use libraries such as OpenCV and Tensorflow to develop our app.

Challenges I ran into

We ran into several problems when designing our solution and this led to many iterations and solutions. We finally picked the solution that we thought was best, easy to use, and most realistic.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We learned about using Fusion360, Wix, and iMovie to make our model, videos, and website. Some of these programs were new to us and others we learned more about which was not an easy task but it was fun to learn about.

What I learned

I learned that it is not easy to develop a solution for a population that is in quarantine. Tasks such as cutting one's hair can be made extra difficult because of lack of access to resources. Making solutions that is easily accessible by most people is super important during this quarantine period.

What's next for selfCut

We are currently developing the software that will take in video data and give instructions on how to cut hair. We are also planning to connect the video stream to a Raspberry Pi. We plan to integrate all these components into our headset.
