Inspiration

We've all experienced those moments when we find ourselves mindlessly scrolling through short form content like Tiktok, IG Reels, Youtube Shorts, losing track of time. We wanted to create a solution that would help people break free from this digital addiction and regain control of their time and attention.

The short form content is very very bad for our attention span and mental health, and we can go on and on about how it's bad for us. So what's the solution?

Well, we also noticed that it's pretty shameful when we get caught by our friends when doomscrolling. So we decided to use this social pressure to its advantage.

What it does

With ShameBoard your scrolls are public among your friends. Your scrolling habits can put you on top of a leaderboard. Imagine the group chat when you hit a milestone when scrolling. Embarrassing right?

How we built it

We made two frontend build on React/Next and used Express for the backend which stores the database of scrolls in memory. We are connecting everything together using Ngrok.

Challenges we ran into

A major challenge we ran into was connecting our components together. For our demo to work we had to make our frontend work on mobile devices and Apple iOS was just not allowing us to do that.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud to have developed this app that empowers individuals to take control of their digital well-being. By providing a simple and effective way to track scrolling habits, our app encourages users to reduce excessive screen time and prioritize real-world activities.

What we learned

During this project, our team gained valuable experience working with new technologies such as Node.js and TypeScript. These technologies were unfamiliar to some members, but through collaborative learning and hands-on experience, we were able to learn about them. This experience has expanded our skill sets and prepared us for future challenges.

What's next for ShameBoard

One potential future step is to break down the types of content users scroll through. By categorizing scrolls into specific types, like Instagram Reels, Posts, TikTok videos, or news articles, we can give users a clearer picture of their digital habits. This detailed analysis will help users pinpoint areas where they might be spending too much time and take steps to cut back on screen time.

Another exciting possibility is to connect our app with other health and wellness apps. By combining data on sleep, exercise, and social media use, we can give users a complete view of their lifestyle and offer personalized advice to improve their overall well-being.
