SkiApp

Gap Analysis

Have you ever stood 30-45mins in a queue at a Ski resort to buy your ski ticket? or Have you ever been switching between websites of different resorts in the area to compare snow information or price information? Ski enthusiasts in Switzerland face inconvenience due to the fragmentation of information and services across various ski resort platforms when planning their trips. There is a clear gap in the Switzerland market for a unified ski aggregator app that provides comprehensive information, including ski pass purchasing and even snow sports rentals, for all major ski resorts in Switzerland.

SkiApp: Mission and Vision

We propose to create an all-in-one snow sports aggregator app that integrates data from multiple ski resort platforms, offering users a single platform to access detailed resort information, real-time conditions, and the ability to purchase ski passes seamlessly. We are on a mission to simplify and enhance the skiing experience in Switzerland by providing a user-friendly platform that offers convenience, accessibility, and a wealth of information. We envision SkiApp to be the go-to app for all ski enthusiasts visiting Switzerland, fostering a sustainable and connected skiing community.

Value Proposition

  1. Convenience and Efficiency
  2. Comprehensive Information
  3. Real-time updates and personalization
  4. Time-savings and best offers

Market Potential

A back-of-the envelope calculation for Ski tickets in switzerland reveal a massive 1.5 million/year CHF total serviceable market potential based on the following assumptions:

  • 2500 ski passes sold per day via our app
  • 26 months ski in CH
  • 75 CHF average ski pass price
  • 1% of the price is charged for this service

To note, the market potential quickly escalates to a 100 million/year CHF total serviceable market if geography expansion to Germany, Austria and France are also considered. Potentially in the future, the option to spread to non-winter mountain activities would also increase the market size.

The simplicity of the business model is its biggest asset:

  • Value Creation: Aggregating ski resort information, simplifying booking processes, and offering personalized recommendations to individuals
  • Value Delivery: Via a user-friendly app with real-time data, secure payment processing, and seamless access to ski resorts.
  • Value Capture: Revenue generation through commissions on bookings, by charging a 1% service fee on all transactions from the app

Financials

  • Investments: Initial investment is expected in three rounds - Round 1 is bootstrapped to demonstrate the proof of concept for the service. Round 2 requires an investment of 500,000 CHF for the development, marketing, and operations of the service. Round 3 will bear expectations of expansion to fuel new avenues.
  • Break-even Analysis: Expected break-even within the first 2 years, with projected revenues covering operating expenses.

Go-To-Market Strategy

  • Collaborate with Swiss ski resorts to access their APIs for data integration.
  • Launch a targeted marketing campaign, leveraging social media, influencers, and partnerships to drive adoption.
  • Offer exclusive early-bird discounts to attract initial users.
  • Expand internationally to cater to tourists visiting Switzerland for skiing.
  • Expand to other seasons and mountain activities.

Technical basis

Our platform is built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend, with Bootstrap and MDB for responsive design. React will be employed for dynamic user interfaces, while Firebase will provide real-time data management. The OpenStreetMap maps are embedded with the help of Leaflet.js. OpenWeather APIs will be integrated for weather updates. Development Environment: Utilizing Node.js in conjunction with npm/yarn for streamlined package management and rapid application development.

Challenges

Sometimes, simple solutions are the best remedy for hiding in the plains sight relevant issues. The critical challenge which lies ahead is to onboard the major ski network partners. Why this solution was not implemented till now still remains a mystery.

Team

  • We bring a team which brings the more than 8 years of combined ski-expertise, a great combination of strategy and technical skills and which shares a common vision. We are a seasoned innovators, dreamers, and doers, ready to make this venture a reality.

What's next for SkiApp

  • We will support sustainability recommendation for ski resorts so as to drive conscious traffic towards more sustainable options
  • The potential for discounts and bundled offers on ski passes creates added value for users.

In the first stage of the process, we are going to bootstrap the Minimum Viable Product and test the market. We would like to connect with experts who have:

  • Network in the ski resort industry
