What it does
SweetFree helps users understand and reduce their sugar intake through a smart, personalized experience. It tracks daily sugar consumption, shows health insights, suggests healthy swaps, and rewards progress with streaks and badges. Users can scan barcodes, log meals, get AI-based meal analysis, and receive motivational reminders when cravings hit. It also offers educational tips, community challenges, and an AI coach that adapts goals based on user habits.
How we built it
I built the app with Next.js and Tailwind CSS for a clean and fast frontend. The backend uses Supabase for authentication, data storage, and user profiles. Sugar data comes from the Open Food Facts API, and AI photo analysis uses OpenAI’s Vision API to detect sugar-heavy foods. Health tracking integrates with Apple Health and Google Fit, while notifications and progress features create a daily engagement loop.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was managing real-time data sync between food logging, AI analysis, and health metrics. Balancing simplicity with accurate sugar tracking also took time — many foods don’t clearly list sugar amounts. Design-wise, keeping the interface friendly and motivating (not shaming) required careful wording and color choices.
Accomplishments that I’m proud of
I’m proud that SweetFree turns a personal struggle into something that can help others. The app feels positive, approachable, and smart, it doesn’t just count sugar but encourages real behavioral change. Building the AI photo recognition and the adaptive coaching system was also a big step forward in merging health awareness with machine learning.
What I learned
I learned how to connect APIs for nutrition data, integrate health tracking tools, and use AI responsibly to encourage better habits. I also discovered that design psychology matters as much as technical features when it comes to user motivation and retention.
What’s next for SweetFree
Next, I want to:
Add social challenges where friends can compete on sugar-free streaks.
Improve AI predictions to detect when users are likely to crave sugar.
Partner with nutrition experts to offer verified guidance.
Release the app publicly with an option to sync wearable data for full-body health insights.
