Inspiration

When we were watching the news, we saw low-income people who don’t have money to buy clean water. After watching this, we wanted to design a device to purify the dirty water and send it to those in need. We also really care about the environment, which is why we want to use solar energy as the primary energy source.

What it does

Our solar-powered drones revolutionize aerial operations by using the sun's energy to purify water in remote or disaster-stricken areas. It navigates the sky with precision and efficiency, equipped with high-efficiency solar panels that power its reverse osmosis system. It lands on a body of water and purifies it on-site, removing contaminants and providing clean drinking water where it is needed most. More than just a technological marvel, our drone embodies innovation, sustainability and hope, paving the way for a future where renewable energy powers transformative solutions to global challenges.

How we built it

Our approach to drone construction involves the use of six propellers to optimize stability and maneuverability in a variety of flight conditions. Additionally, we integrated a cutting-edge reverse osmosis unit underneath the drone, enhancing its versatility by enabling mobile water purification capabilities. This innovative combination of propulsion and water treatment technologies exemplifies our commitment to engineered solutions that solve multifaceted challenges with ingenuity and efficiency.

Challenges we ran into

During the drone design phase, extensive discussions revolved around the optimal number of propellers to be used, trade-offs among factors such as stability, maneuverability and power efficiency. Ultimately, our deliberations culminated in a strategic decision that balanced performance requirements with design constraints to ensure the optimal configuration for our drone operations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that for the competition, we were able to come together and create a new project that can potentially help those in need. We listened to each other, supported each other, and made compromises to create the project you're seeing now. We are very proud of the project that we created and the information that we learned along the way.

What we learned

Through the development and deployment of solar-powered reverse osmosis drones, we gain a deep understanding of the synergy between technology and sustainability. Our trip highlighted the transformative potential of renewable energy, particularly solar energy, to solve pressing global challenges such as access to clean water.

What's next for TarantulaX

The next phase for our solar-powered reverse osmosis drone, the Tarantula X, is to hone its technology and expand its reach to more communities in need. We focus on optimizing purification systems to maximize efficiency and water quality, while increasing drone durability and autonomy for improved performance in a variety of environments. We work closely with local stakeholders to tailor solutions to their specific needs and promote sustainable long-term impact. Ultimately, our vision is to empower communities, build resilience and create positive change through innovative and sustainable solutions.
