Inspiration
Our analysis was driven by the need to understand the interplay between vehicle categories, their fuel consumption, and the associated costs in California. Given the state's diverse vehicle fleet and its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, we aimed to provide insights that could inform policy decisions and consumer choices.
What It Does
This analysis examines various vehicle categories, mapping them to their typical fuel types, and calculates the annual fuel costs based on factors such as fuel economy, annual mileage, and fuel prices from 2019 to 2024. By doing so, it highlights the economic implications of fuel consumption across different vehicle types.
How We Built It
We utilized data from reputable sources, including the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the California Open Data Portal, to gather information on fuel prices, vehicle fuel economy, and annual mileage. We then applied formulas to calculate the annual fuel consumption and costs for each vehicle category, considering year-over-year changes in fuel prices.
Challenges We Ran Into
One of the primary challenges was ensuring the accuracy and consistency of data across multiple years and sources. Additionally, accounting for variations in vehicle usage patterns and the adoption of alternative fuels added complexity to the analysis.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
We're proud to have developed a comprehensive framework that integrates multiple data points to provide a clear picture of fuel consumption and costs across various vehicle categories. This analysis can serve as a valuable tool for stakeholders aiming to make informed decisions about vehicle usage and fuel consumption.
What We Learned
Through this project, we gained a deeper understanding of the factors influencing fuel consumption and costs in California. We also learned the importance of using accurate and up-to-date data to inform analyses that can impact policy and consumer behavior.
What's Next for Team Hextech
Moving forward, we plan to expand our analysis to include the environmental impacts of fuel consumption, such as greenhouse gas emissions. We also aim to explore the effects of emerging technologies, like electric vehicles, on fuel consumption patterns and costs.
