Inspiration

Climate change is affecting our lives. We want to make a positive impact on climate change with Google. Fast fashion has become an issue for textile waste. According to Earth.org, 92 million tonnes of textile are discarded in landfills, which is approximately 1.7 billion Co2 emissions annually. The emission continues to increase drastically with the current fashion trends.

To help reduce textile waste, we designed Tex2 App to support sustainable fashion. Our mission is to bring sustainable solution and creativity to every stylish citizen in the world.

What it does

Our App utilizes artificial intelligence to generate new clothing designs from customers’ unwanted clothing pieces. With the new design, clients can use as reference to create their own fashion pieces or partner with local creators to have their pieces made.

How we built it

We first made wireframes in Figma to translate our brainstorming into visuals. Then we split into teams to work with React-Native for the front-end and python for the AI portion of our project.

Challenges we ran into

When trying to cut clothes up into re-arrangeable pieces, we had trouble finding an algorithm suited to our use case. Clothes with many patterns or colors were difficult to distinguish and section. As an alternative, we tried sectioning clothing by contour lines. However, it was again difficult to distinguish between the contour lines and other features. Another caveat that was discovered late was the standardized use of vectors with swapped x and y coordinates.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Developing a process to remove artifacts without compromising key features of an image was an accomplishment. We are proud of everything we accomplished today. We created an AI for the first time and made a good app using React Native. I am proud of my team for the effort they put in.

What we learned

  • We learned how to diagram and wireframe with Figma.
  • We learned how to create a React-Native application.
  • We learned some AI concepts with Python.

What's next for Tex2

We plan to expand our options in what AI can do to make new clothes for our users. We originally envisioned our AI taking up to 1 to 5 items to combine and restyles. We were also planning to turn old clothes into fashionable bags like tote bags and over the shoulder bag. Our vision for our App is that by reusing and restyling warn out or old clothes, we can slow down the massive carbon emission production by creating new clothes. We want our App to be assessable to everybody.
