The Groovies, SDG 3

Inspiration

Being teens, we all went through periods when we are not mentally stable. We realised that writing about how we feel would be extremely helpful since we don’t always feel confident enough to tell it to somebody else. That’s why we came up with this idea, which lets people talk about their problems privately and still get a comforting message that will make the user feel better.

What it does

It harnesses machine learning to detect someone’s emotions through diary-like entries, and then sends comforting messages to the user.

How I built it

We researched python modules that could separate text, then used a machine learning program to identify the writer’s emotions. Hutto, C.J. & Gilbert, E.E. (2014). VADER: A Parsimonious Rule-based Model for Sentiment Analysis of Social Media Text. Eighth International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM-14). Ann Arbor, MI, June 2014.

Challenges I ran into

We had a tough time writing the code for certain parts of it. While coding, we also found many loopholes in our code which we had to edit. We also had to learn more advanced coding to write the code as we only know the basics of python.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We had to learn machine learning and find a suitable module in a harsh amount of time.

What I learned

I learned how to use machine learning to identify between multiple classes, and separating text into data.

What's next for the gr

We will be branching out with different methods of identifying emotions, striving to improve the reliability of our test methods, and attempting to collaborate with professionals to deliver help to users of our platform that need it.
