Inspiration - What goes on behind our decisions?
What it does-
Most activities, including learning or even watching movies involve subconscious decisions that invoke various degrees of attention. Are these decisions purely a frontal lobe process or does it involve a close interplay with other lobes like the Occipital and Temporal lobes?
How we built it -
Electrodes pairs were approximately placed at Fp1, Fp2, T4, T6 and O1,O2 with reference electrodes at A1, A2 and CZ. A Muse 2 was used to acquire signals from the frontal lobe and one EXG Pill each, to acquire biopotentials from the occipital and temporal lobes. Petal Metrics software was used to connect the Muse 2 with a laptop running Windows 10, through bluetooth. To minimize synchronization issues across all the channels, and avoid time slicing on the single ADC on the Arduino UNO, the two EXG Pills were independently connected to one Arduino UNO each, and both the Arduino’s were connected (through Type A USB/serial) to the same laptop connected to the Muse 2 device. Online boilerplate code and example code provided by Upsidedown labs was used to acquire EEG biopotentials from the EXG Pills. Tera Term terminal emulating software was used to log the data from the Arduinos and save it with timestamps in a CSV file.
The subject was offered a large section of online movies on a different laptop and was asked to browse, select, view or reject and repeat the process as per their free will. It was intended that the subjects activities on the laptop would be monitored by a Desktop Screen Recorder software which would record the subjects expressions and eye movements through a webcam along with a time stamp. This would allow for synchronization with the recorded EEG bio potentials and perhaps even overlay the same over the video showing the subjects actions and expressions while using the laptop.
Challenges we ran into -Failure to anticipate USB C vs. USB A availability on laptop and timestamp synchronization issues.
Accomplishments that we're proud of - Having a go at it despite limited skills and time
What we learned - A lot of fine grained details to look out for!
