Inspiration
Our inspiration for TripFlip came from our collective realization that when we go travel, or vacation somewhere new, we often struggle to find new things to do and places to explore.
Googling to find things to do leads to cluttered results, and can easily cause an information overload. We strived to solve this problem by presenting aggregated data on travel destinations elegantly and by algorithmically providing users with optimized matches.
What it does
TripFlip enables its user to explore travel destinations and events in an elegant manner. We enable our users to Flip through matches to find new places and things to do, with the users personal budget and interests in mind.
How we built it
We created TripFlip with:
- React Native to provide a seamless mobile experience between iOS devices and Androids
- Expo Go to enable us to test and deploy our app as we developed
- JavaScript to tie the front-end and back-end together
- Express to create a custom api to enable us to fetch relevant data for our needs
- FIGMA to ideate, design, and prototype our app and ensure our interactions make sense
Challenges we ran into
- Learning how to utilize React Native and Expo Go to develop and deploy mobile apps
- Brainstorming through the database and data needs of our project, and minimizing our scope to stay within our given timeframe
- Building a custom API and implementing it into our app
- Having enough time to execute our vision and idea to the level of perfection that we were aiming for
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Learning React Native and being able to deploy our app to our devices through Expo Go to test the functionality outside only a emulator
- Building a minimal and intuitive UI and well as well thought out interactions within our app, to maximize engagement and user experience
What we've learned
- Humans have had increasingly short attention spans, and we wanted to capitalize on that.
- The current processes of researching travel destinations and things to do are difficult to navigate and easily overload the user with information.
- We aim to provide the most amount of information in the least amount of space to maximize our users experience and popularize flipper style apps.
What's next for TripFlip
- Our API needs work, that is no doubt. Figuring out where we want to take our API and maximize its effectiveness and functionality will take a well thought out overhaul.
- Our interactions are not perfect, and with user feedback we aim to improve that. Implementing new options for those who do not want to be limited to our swipe style transactions is on the horizon.
- Our next goal is to incorporate a community-driven review system for each destination and activity, as well as enable our users to contribute local events to their area.
