Inspiration

A lot of students at UW are scared of geese, but something that is even scarier is finding storage amid a co-op term. To combat this issue, we created a unified platform called UW Cache.

What it does

UW Cache is a unified space for students at the University of Waterloo to find storage spaces when they leave for a co-op term. This web app requires a user to make an account for them to view listings or post listings. Users who post a listing are required to have an address, a picture of the storage space, and their contact information. Once an interested party believes they have found a suitable fit for their belongings, they can directly reach out to the user who posted the listing using the contact information provided. At this point, UW Cache has reached its goal of connecting students with each other to find storage space before they leave on their work term.

How we built it

We build this intuitive and beautiful website application using React JS. To store data of user accounts, their listings, and information we used Firebase.

Challenges we ran into

Some of the challenges we ran into were connecting our project with Firebase, implementing a search and filtering system, and working around different time zones. We were able to resolve our technical issues through following tutorials and other resources on the web. To work around the time zones, we divided up the work such that all the pieces would be able to come together by the final deadline.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of solving our challenge about implementing a search and filtering system. This feature took an extended period of hours of debugging and finding valuable resources to find a solution. With a team member is who is completely in the opposite time zone, we are proud of our time management skills as we were all able to come ready with our parts done before the deadline.

What we learned

Through working on UW Cache, we became more familiar with React JS, firebase, and debugging. It was a true team effort, as we all had different parts that we took on to make this project.

What's next for UW Cache

As prospective university students enrolled in the co-op stream, we plan to scale this platform for the University of Waterloo to test out the usage of this product. If this platform is something that is widely used by students, we will into building this platform for other universities as well!
