Inspiration
Music is a universal language, and we recognized Spotify wrapped to be one of the most anticipated times of the year. Realizing that people have an interest in learning about their own music taste, we created verses to not only allow people to quiz themselves on their musical interests, but also quiz their friends to see who knows them best.
What it does
A quiz that challenges you to answer questions about your Spotify listening habits, allowing you to share with friends and have them guess your top songs/artists by answering questions. Creates a leaderboard of your friends who have taken the quiz, ranking them by the scores they obtained on your quiz.
How we built it
We built the project using react.js, HTML, and CSS. We used the Spotify API to get data on the user's listening history, top songs, and top artists as well as enable the user to log into verses with their Spotify. JSON was used for user data persistence and Figma was used as the primary UX/UI design tool.
Challenges we ran into
Implementing the Spotify API was a challenge as we had no previous experience with it. We had to seek out mentors for help in order to get it working. Designing user-friendly UI was also a challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We took a while to get the backend working so only had a limited amount of time to work on the frontend, but managed to get it very close to our original Figma prototype.
What we learned
We learned more about implementing APIs and making mobile-friendly applications.
What's next for verses
So far, we have implemented verses with Spotify API. In the future, we hope to link it to more musical platforms such as Apple Music. We also hope to create a leaderboard for players' friends to see which one of their friends can answer the most questions about their music taste correctly.
