Inspiration
Covid-19 has resulted in a upheaval of everyone's way of life. Suddenly, all the things that were easily accessible before are no longer within our reach. Our aim with this project is to make accessible one of the most important learning environments for everyone, the museums. We hope that this immersive experience will serve as a interesting way for people of all ages to get exposure to the various facets of history.
What it does
VR_Museum will place you in the simulation of a museum where you can walk around the different historical halls, view the exhibits in each hall and hear more information about the pieces.
How we built it
We first made 3D models of the various halls we wanted and their architecture to set up in Unity 3D. We then added the visuals for the exhibits and researched to get some information regarding each piece and used the textual content thus obtained and fed it to Alexa Text-to-Speech service to generate the audio files. We then augmented the audio files on top of each exhibit and added play and pause funcitonality to it.
Challenges we ran into
Some of the challenges we faced in the process are as follows:
- Color blending for a milder, more educational environment setup
- Positioning of the reticle pointer, could not accomplish objectives with gaze pointer
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have completed a full audio-visual VR simulation despite our relative newness to the field.
What we learned
We learned to render 3d models and augment audio to visuals in Unity 3D and use extensions such as Google VR to add our desired features.
What's next for VR_Museum
In the future, we hope to add more halls and pieces to the framework, as well as innovate the way in which we present the information to our users.
