Inspiration
We realized that most elderly people have trouble using powerful search engines like Google Maps. Taking that into account, we decided to develop a user-friendly web app that would improve their quality of life.
What it does
It generates the shortest route that passes through certain interest points, selected by the user, and displays it on a map with custom markers.
How we built it
We used Meteor.JS for the back end in parallel to a client-side with Blaze, Bootstrap helped speed up styling and Google API services generated beautiful maps and markers.
Challenges we ran into
Chaining API calls in an ordered way and debugging a weird global variable bug involving window.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Using Meteor.JS to create a functional web app, adding custom markers to Google Map waypoints and making it work in less than 24 hours.
What we learned
Meteor is awesome, ES6 rocks (die coffescript), Google API examples suck but their overall service is impressive.
What's next for WiseWalk
Including more interest points and allowing users to save their favorite routes to deliver a more personal experience. We are also considering a category-based organization of the web app to make finding interest points easier.
