Inspiration

We were inspired by the lack of work-life balance that was apparent in many places around the world. Working from home is slowly becoming the norm - as more and more people are now working remotely, work and home have blended into one, making it increasingly difficult for people to separate their lives at home and at work. We realized that a big reason why this problem exists is because most people don’t know what to do during their free time, so they end up working more and neglecting their own well-being.

What it does

The user first takes a short quiz to answer some quick details about themselves and their work life. After that, Worklax helps the user to generate a list of activities and a schedule based on the amount of free time they have and their interests.

How we built it

We built it using Flask as a back-end and React as a front-end. Figma was used for the prototyping. We also built it using the Google Cloud platform.

Challenges we ran into

We had to learn many new technologies in a short period of time to achieve the desired result and work with each other. Time zone differences also played a part. We also had trouble passing in data from the frontend to the backend and back.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of the fact that we managed to complete a project and learn something new in the process. We’re also proud of what we built over this weekend.

What we learned

We learned how to connect a Flask backend with a React frontend. We also learned how to use Google Cloud and various other modules.

What's next for Worklax

Our next step is to suggest more activities and events to our users. We also plan to create more personalized suggestions and come up with a greater variety of events, perhaps using machine learning for better recommendations through the user’s feedback. We also want to implement APIs such as Eventbrite's to suggest activities for the users.

Business viability

Worklax will make a good business as we’re able to recommend activities, events, and products to users of our web app.

First of all, it’ll have a wide reach as the project is targeted at the 9-5 working crowd, which consists of most of the population. Furthermore, trying to find more leisure time and balancing our work-life habits are increasingly important due to “Work From Home” situations, where people can get caught up in their work and neglect leisure time. More and more people are paying attention and trying to combat this problem, which is why it’ll be easy for them to adapt our solution.

Secondly, this product requires a minimal cost to run. This will create a profit, if we could, for example, engage advertisers who want to promote their events. We could also create a profit by selling goods related to the suggested activity - for example, if a user decides to take up “cycling”, we could suggest bicycles for them to buy.

Thirdly, this product is unique. When people search up “activities to do”, they only find a search page full of sites telling you the generic “read a book” and “exercise”, etc. With our product, they are able to receive personalized suggestions on what leisure activities they could engage in.

Finally, this product will always be useful. No matter their geographical region, financial status, everyone who is working will face this problem (even if they’re not working from home) and will be able to make use of this product.
