El Segundo
Welcome to the single largest refinery on the West Coast. Our El Segundo facility was ranked in 2023 by South Coast AQMD Annual Emissions Reporting program as the lowest per-barrel emitting refinery in Southern California. In fact, refinery emissions per barrel decreased more than 30% between 2011 and 2024.
Who we are
Chevron El Segundo helps Southern California go and grow—providing more than 35% of the jet fuel used at Los Angeles International Airport and about 25% of the region’s motor vehicle fuel. We safely deliver affordable, reliable energy people and businesses depend on every day.
History and heritage
Los Angeles, 1911. A fast-growing town with the future at its fingertips.
Standard Oil employee Richard Hanna is charged with overseeing the company’s second refinery. He finds the perfect coastal location perched on Southern California sand dunes. Mr. Hanna’s wife, Virginia, gives the location a fitting name: El Segundo. Spanish for “the second.”
El Segundo soon becomes a thriving refinery town as its products fuel innovation, adventure and growth. Motion pictures, agriculture, aerospace, freeways, tourism, ballgames – the Southern California dream powered by affordable, reliable energy.
Today, with a workforce of nearly 2,000 people, the refinery continues to deliver traditional oil and gas products —while working to lower the carbon intensity of our operations—helping Chevron and Southern California lead in the future of energy.
